Day 33. Williams, AZ to Prescott, AZYesterday: Day 32. Tusayan, AZ to Williams, AZTomorrow: Day 34. Prescott, AZ to Cave Creek, AZ (Phoenix metro)
11 September, 2003 -- Day 33.
Another relatively mellow day, the 72 miles from Williams to Prescott once again saw me ride on interstate. From Williams, I enjoyed a steep 15 mile downhill on I-40 toward Ash Fork. From Ash Fork, I continued a gentle descent to Paulden, which rests in a valley before a climb up to Prescott. When I left this morning, I could not help but feel moved by the 9/11 memorial services that were being shown on t.v. Much of my ride was filled with thoughts that stemmed from those events... let's just say I am very happy to be out here on my bike exploring the natural world and meeting people from all walks of life. It truly is a sign of the great freedom that I am able to enjoy in our society. Nice. I had entertained thoughts of riding 100 or possibly even 130 miles today, landing me as close to Phoenix as I could reasonably get today. I felt physically solid and was prepared to roll through Prescott after some lunch... but once I got some food in me and the afternoon heat moved-in, I decided that 70 miles was a solid day and I would save the heavey miles all for tomorrow. When at lunch, a county police officer came up to me saying "HEY MAN! I passed you a couple times way out near Paulden and Chino Valley earlier today... you sure made it up this hill in a hurry!" Anyway, we talked for a bit (I remembered him passing me, too... ) Anyway, a $30 motel room saw me asleep almost immediately.. with no dinner... I wanted to get an early start tomorrow, so no complaints. I will try and get an early start tomorrow as I finish out my trek to the Phoenix metro area (Cave Creek, Arizona) for a ride somewhere between 110 and 120 miles. |
