The day has been largely spent inside. Austin rests on the side of a mountain so tomorrow's plan is to leave bright-n-early. Even before sunrise if I manage to fall asleep early enough.
This motel room is by far the smallest and most rundown of any that I have ever stayed in. I can get 4 channels total. Two of them are identical and contain 100% hunting shows. I can't tell you how many turkeys and deer I have seen perish since resting here.
The others are fuzzy and feature talk shows by 'local' lawyers called 'Lawyers, Money and Guns'.
Austin is a town that is barely hanging on to life; it was created and prospered in the mid-to-late 1800's thanks to a discovery of some precious metal -- gold or silver or both... i honestly don't remember... it now houses about 300 people, one or two restaurants, a couple bars and a few motels. I have failed to find a grocery store and have so far relied on the two mini-marts for snacks. I have eaten every meal at the restaurant across the street.
But the objective really was not to site-see, but instead to stay in the shade, rehydrate and prepare for a couple long days ahead of me. With this, I have succeeded. Dinner and bed soon. The desert awaits. |
